How Brand Innovation Built a New Alcohol Category: The Launch of Sliq Spirited Ice

Why CPG Marketers Must Reimagine Innovation—and How Agency Squid Leads the Way

In a landscape where most CPG growth stems from category expansion and portfolio reinvention, brand innovation has never been more important. Consumers are increasingly demanding new formats, functional benefits, and lifestyle alignment from the products they choose. The challenge for modern CPG marketers is how to anticipate those needs—and move fast enough to deliver.

At Agency Squid, we don’t just respond to cultural and category shifts—we help drive them. From reshaping the better-for-you adult beverage market with White Claw and FitVine to helping legacy CPG companies reinvent their future, we specialize in launching entirely new categories through insight-driven strategy and disruptive creativity.

Sliq Spirited Ice, developed in partnership with Jel Sert, is a perfect example.

The Brief: Transforming Frozen Novelties into a New Alcohol Category

Jel Sert is a household name in the frozen treat space—home to iconic brands like Otter Pops and Fla-Vor-Ice. With decades of experience bringing freezer-aisle joy to families, the company recognized an opportunity to evolve with its consumer: introduce a frozen alcohol product that combined nostalgic enjoyment with modern adult tastes.

Enter Sliq Spirited Ice—a boozy, better-for-you frozen treat that would allow Jel Sert to break into the adult beverage space for the first time in its history.

But moving from kid-friendly novelties to adult alcohol wasn’t just a product decision—it was a brand innovation challenge. Jel Sert needed a partner who understood alcohol regulations, market segmentation, retail strategy, and the nuances of positioning something truly new.

That’s why they turned to Agency Squid.

The Opportunity: A White Space Within the Alcohol Industry

While a handful of boozy popsicle brands existed in the market, none had invested in brand storytelling, education, or retailer engagement. The result? A stagnant category with no clear leader, low brand affinity, and weak shelf presence.

We saw an opportunity to build something Jel Sert could own:

  • A new alcohol subcategory rooted in fun, functionality, and format innovation

  • A brand that could command retail placement alongside hard seltzers, canned cocktails, and sessionable wines

  • A product that would capitalize on seasonal behavior, wellness trends, and nostalgia all at once

Agency Squid’s Approach: Innovation with Intention

1. Product Definition and Strategic Positioning

We worked closely with Jel Sert’s internal teams to help define everything from:

  • Flavors and ABV

  • Price point and packaging formats

  • Go-to-market strategy

  • Retail and distributor education tools

All guided by consumer research, category white space, and emerging lifestyle trends in the better-for-you and adult beverage sectors.

2. Naming and Brand Development

We named the brand Sliq to evoke sleekness, modernity, and premium refreshment. The descriptor “Spirited Ice” signaled the alcohol content and novelty format in a clear, clever way—instantly communicating what it is and why it’s different.

From there, we built a full identity system that was:

  • Visually iconic on shelf

  • Flexible for both alcohol and non-alc frozen formats

  • Boldly differentiated from the plastic tub packaging of competitors

3. Packaging and Visual Storytelling

We designed custom dielines and an iceberg-inspired motif to communicate both quality and cold. Unlike competitors who relied on value-tier tubs, we used recyclable materials and vibrant flavor-specific illustrations to elevate shelf appeal and signal modern consumer values.

Every design choice supported the product’s positioning as a premium, portable, adult indulgence that feels nostalgic—but new.

Launching With Velocity: From Retail Strategy to National Awareness

Most competitors had simply placed product on shelves and hoped for discovery. We built an omnichannel strategy designed to drive awareness, consideration, and trial.

Retail and Distributor Enablement

We created sell-in materials, tasting toolkits, and educational content to help distributors understand the opportunity and activate placement. Because this was a new category, we focused heavily on retailer training and buyer alignment—ensuring teams knew how to position the product on shelf and in-store.

Mobile-First Digital Experience

We designed a mobile-first website built for product education, flavor exploration, and conversion at retail. The site featured:

  • Ingredient and ABV breakdowns

  • Lifestyle imagery for social connection

  • Store locator and trial-driving CTAs

Media & PR Activation

We launched with earned media, influencer content, and trade press support to build credibility and anticipation. Major distributors and retailers quickly took notice—aligning Sliq alongside hard seltzers and health-forward adult beverages in reset planograms.

Sliq Spirited Ice Brand Launch And Creative

The Results: Category Creation That Converts

Since its national launch, Sliq Spirited Ice has been picked up by multiple top 10 distributors, with orders prepared well in advance of summer. The brand has landed on shelves across the U.S., supported by buyer enthusiasm and consumer demand.

  • Positioned as a premium adult frozen novelty

  • Considered part of the better-for-you alcohol portfolio alongside hard seltzers and organic wines

  • Earned media and industry buzz helping build organic traffic and trial ahead of key seasons

Most importantly, Sliq has created a new use occasion in adult beverage: frozen, flavorful, and functional refreshment built for outdoor gatherings, on-the-go enjoyment, and social moments.
